Welcome to Group Therapy in Schools

Why group therapy

All around the nation, there are teens and young adults who quit fighting their demons and leave this world. Within the 2017 year, there were 47,173 cases of suicide. Suicide can be caused by an underlying factor that may not be known, but suicidal people feel they are alone and never reach out to get help. This is why schools should have group therapy as an elective. This can lower the rate of suicide because it will reduce stress in teens, and give them coping mechanisms to use in the future, and pass on to others.

Our Services

What We Provide

Sunset Yoga
Notebook and Pen
Group of Friends

Mental Relaxation

Mental relaxation will include meditation, coloring, and yoga. When meditating and doing yoga, we become one with our mind, learn to control our breathing, and reduce heart rate, and blood pressure. Coloring relaxes the mind and reduces stress by letting go of the thought of being perfect by picking any color for any design, increases creativity, and relaxes the fear center in the brain.

Coping Skills

Cutting, starving, burning, hair pulling are all ways people self harm. People are damaging their beautiful/handsome body so they can take out frustration, anger, weight problems, etc. During this elective, lessons will be taught on how to cope with life events so students are not harmed or in danger.

Community

The most important service offered is community, which includes small groups and one on ones. Small groups are ways to connect the students to each other and have them realize they are not alone. The small group will be where important topics are discussed that were chosen by the students anonymously. One on one time is where an individual checks in with the instructor and they develop ways to deal with personal stress being faced by the student.

Rules for Class Time

No matter where you go, there are sets of rules to follow, that is including rules of this class room. Both students and teacher are required to follow simple rules. There will be no sharing information outside of the class room, and all students have to sign a form saying they will not speak of others problems outside of community, (link at the bottom of the page). Students and teachers must provide a positive and safe place for students to come together. The number one focus of the idea of Group Therapy is to reinforce that you are not alone and provide help. That will not be possible if students don't earn trust and support others. One important rule is if you hear a comment, or threat being made about hurting ones self, or another, it should be reported to the teacher immediately. The teacher and student must fill out a report and the teacher has to take it to the office immediately.
Other than that, there are really no more rules other than respect others, try to empathize, and be open; remember this is a safe place.

About the Founder

Hi, my name is Chaney Park and I am the founder of Group Therapy in Schools. Getting help has always been an issue for me. Not being able to open up to the five therapist I went to really had an impact on my life and caused me to get medicated. In 2019 I had suicidal idealizations and almost attempted suicide. The first time I was in danger of taking my own life, I had a panic attack and was taken to St. Rose Hospital. There, I was evaluated by a professional and was informed I needed to reside at Seven Hills Behavioral Hospital. I was diagnosed there with PTSD from an ex-boyfriend who sexually assaulted me and put on a different medication. During my week of staying there, I learned coping skills and new ways to calm my mind. When I was discharged a week later, I said I was never going back. Two weeks later I almost jumped off a bridge and was forced back. During this stay, I focused more on myself and getting better. My medication was switched once again and I learned new coping skills and other ways to control my thoughts and actions. I have not been back to Seven Hills since and I am doing much better. I have started to see life in a different perspective and learn the importance of my life. I am still working through my struggles and using techniques I learned so I do not end up making a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

My goal is to teach others ways to deal with problems in their life and try to decrease the rate of suicide. When someone dies of suicide, that is one less person on this Earth to change the world.
